| Environmental impact of Golf courses
With the increase in popularity of golf courses, the concern over environmental impact of the use of land for this purpose has also increased. The major concerns are related to the wastage of water and excessive use of chemical fertilizers as well as pesticides.
According to an estimate by the UN, golf courses around the world consume almost 9.5 billion liters of water on a daily basis. In case the water used is potable, this quantity would be adequate to provide drinking water to about 4.7 billion people. However, the contention of most golf courses’ management bodies is that they use either rainwater or non-potable water for irrigating the area.
Many golf courses used toxic chemicals like Diazinon in the past that threatened the existence of bird species. So, the use of Diazinon was forbidden in 1988 by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
A lot of people still oppose golf courses on the argument that they obstruct the passage of migrating animals and destroy land, which might have been a sanctuary for birds along with other flora and fauna.
