Understanding How a Golf Ball Works

Early golf balls were quite expensive but with the development of the rubber golf balls, all golf players could use golf balls. One of the first golf balls the Feathrie was found to travel further due to the dimples or indentations on the ball. This is why dimpled golf balls are used to this day.

The dimples on the surface of the golf ball reduce aerodynamic drag. When golf balls sail through the air they create a pocket of low-pressure air that causes drag. Dimples actually decrease the pressure differential between the surrounding air and low-pressure zone creating less drag.

The dimples on the golf ball achieve this by creating air turbulence in the surrounding air. Instead of having the air trail behind the ball the air trail warps towards the back of the ball and does not trail behind. Dimples were first added to golf balls in the early 1900s and they have lasted to this day.
